Fritz Rumpf’s Schlieben, dated 1910 and associated with the period 1910–13, is a spirited German beverage poster built around a single theatrical figure. Against a near-black ground, a woman in a leopard-patterned dress raises a glass while cradling a labelled bottle beneath her other arm. Her yellow hair, red accessories and sweeping gesture turn the act of serving a drink into a compact performance, while the name “Schlieben” blazes across the upper left in emphatic yellow lettering.

Rumpf worked in early twentieth-century Germany, when commercial illustration was increasingly shaped by the direct visual language of the modern poster. Designs needed to command attention quickly, and this one does so through reduction rather than elaborate description: one figure, one bottle, one glass and one prominent word. Yet the economy of the arrangement is balanced by Rumpf’s decorative eye. The patterned costume, floral hair ornaments and looping ribbons introduce an exuberance that distinguishes the poster from more austere forms of product advertising.

A closer look

The woman’s pose gives the composition its momentum. Her body occupies the central vertical axis, but her outstretched arm carries the eye towards the left, where the raised glass catches small pale highlights. A trace of golden-yellow liquid and what appears to be a slight spill at the rim sharpen the sense of movement. The gesture feels deliberately expansive, as though a static advertising figure has momentarily broken into dance.

Colour is organised in broad, forceful contrasts. Vivid yellow appears in the lettering, hair and patterned dress, linking the product name to the central character. Red flowers, ribbons and costume details provide warmer accents, while cream and brown markings animate the leopard-like pattern. All of these elements stand forward against the dark background, which contains little distracting detail. The result is visually immediate without being visually sparse.

Several quieter details reward closer attention. The bottle’s ornate label is visible but not fully legible, allowing its decorative shape to contribute to the design without competing with the principal lettering. Below, the pale lines of a chair form a crisp geometric counterpoint to the curves of the woman’s arms, hair and clothing. Bold contours hold the figure together, while minimal shading preserves the poster’s flattened graphic character. Even the asymmetry is carefully controlled: the large word at upper left is answered by the bottle at lower right, creating a diagonal balance across the sheet.

Context and significance

Rumpf was known for graphic and illustrative work that combined clarity with an interest in atmosphere and local character. Here, however, observation is placed firmly in the service of promotion. Rather than presenting a detailed setting, he constructs an instantly recognisable mood of conviviality around the drink itself. The woman is less a portrait than a vividly designed advertising presence, her costume and gesture communicating pleasure before the viewer has had time to inspect the bottle.

Schlieben belongs to a period in which European poster design was refining the relationship between illustration and typography. Its lettering does not sit apart as a caption; it participates in the composition through scale, colour and position. That close integration of word and figure gives the work its enduring graphic force: playful, concentrated and unmistakably designed to be understood at a glance.
